Toronto (November 15, 2016) – On Sunday, November 13, 2016, over 350 guests gathered to enjoy an afternoon of exotic tea, delectable fare and fun fashion at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel for Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada’s 3rd annual Tea & Tiaras event.
Presented by Bloom Lanys and hosted by CBC News’ Suhana Meharchand, guests donning elegant attire, tiaras and fascinator hats enjoyed an extensive selection of blended teas, finger sandwiches, petit fours and crumpets prepared by Executive Chef Robert Mills in the hotel’s decorated concert hall. This year’s event raised a record $100,000 for Starlight through ticket sales and generous donations from sponsors, contributors and guests among other initiatives.
The main event was a fashion show sponsored by local apparel company Nuvango, who collaborated and created stylish hospital gowns for Starlight’s expanded pilot program Ward + Robes. Nine Starlight representatives, who have benefitted from Starlight programs, sashayed down the catwalk in gowns designed by artists Max Neutra, Nanami Cowdroy, Carnovsky, Skinner and Derek Prospero. All the Starlight fashion show participants were gifted their gowns by Starlight.
Celebrity guests included actress Naomi Snieckus (Mr. D), comedian Allison Dore, musician Simone Denny (formerly of Love Inc.), actress Cindy Sampson (Private Eyes), Angie Campanelli (founder FamilyTravelGuide.ca), actress Lauren Hammersley (Orphan Black and Mr. D), model Stacey McKenzie and many other notable Canadians.
“We’re always amazed by the energy and enthusiasm this event produces. From the minute they arrive our guests embrace the spirit and stories of the Starlight kids and teens onsite,” said Jeannie O’Regan, VP Special Events and Operations, Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada. “The excitement of the teens who partook in the fashion show wearing their new Nuvango-designed hospital gowns was moving and inspiring.”
Other event highlights included a live performance by Starlight teen Sabrina who sang her original song ‘Gravity,’ the 2016 Collectible Bear ‘Flash’ designed by Starlight child Noah was available for purchase and a beauty corner filled with amazing products at affordable prices.
The funds raised from Tea & Tiaras go towards in and out-of-hospital programming for seriously ill children including Hospital Happenings (an afternoon of fun and entertainment for in-patients and their families) and Day Brighteners and Great Escapes that range from special outings to music, sporting or spa day events.
